Timber flooring is a natural product, and absorbs moisture from the atmosphere - it expands and contracts with the change in seasons and with varying environmental conditions. All timber floors need a perimeter expansion gap to allow for movement, the size of which needs be proportionate to the room size.
 
Edge gaps need to be left clear to allow for expansion, as do transitions in finishes from timber to tiles, vinyl or carpet at doorways. Establishing and maintaining the correct edge gaps is critically important in sports halls, where there are additional practical factors to consider. Strength and durability is important; so is impact-resistance - especially if sports like football and hockey are planned, when the skirting will need to withstand ball and stick impacts. Aluminium angle skirting fulfils these requirements and has the added advantage of having a relatively thin section and low elevation, minimising the risk of trips and toe injuries.
